Wrapping Technology

The roll wrap process involves the wrapping of an epoxy resin pre-impregnated carbon / glass or Kevlar fibre cloth (Pre-Preg) around a male parallel or tapered mould known as a mandrel. The outer diameter of the mandrel then forms the inner diameter of the final tube. The sequence of pictures (below) shows the mandrel being offered up to the pre-preg cloth and then the resulting tube, after pressure rolling on a specially made table, ready for curing.

Mandrel Wrapping

The mandrel and cloth are now spiral wrapped with a consolidation tape under tension to hold everything in place during the cure phase. Curing involves heating the mandrel and cloth to around 120o (depending on resin system) which causes the epoxy resin to undergo a chemical reaction to form a structure which when cooled will hold the carbon / glass fibres together in the shape of the tube required. The inner mandrel is then extracted to leave the tube ready for machining or finishing as necessary.
